FARM HAPPENINGS
Now that we have processed the last batch of our broiler chickens for the season, we can turn our attention to Thanksgiving turkeys. Next Wednesday we will haul our first trailer load of 125 turkeys to Twin Cities Pack, our local poultry processor in Clinton, Wisconsin. They should be back to the farm store and ready for customers by noon on Thursday, November 7th.

Anna and I are in a bit of a disagreement about how big the turkeys are this year. With just a few weeks left I think they are growing well and will average 18-19 pounds after processing, she is thinking they are smaller and in the 15-16 lb. range. We will see how well the first batch weighs in this week, a nice dinner at I.D. Restaurant in Delafield is riding on the outcome!
The week of November 11th we will take in two more loads of turkeys for processing, as well as our first load of twenty fall hogs. Anyone interested in filling their freezer with delicious pasture-raised pork for the winter can order a half or whole hog on our website in the next ten days and the pork should be back to the store for pickup by early December.
Eggs continue to be in short supply. The older hens production is decreasing faster than the new hens are picking up their production. Out of the 600 new hens I think we collected only 15 eggs today. Hopefully they start cranking out more eggs in time for the holiday baking season.
VOTE YES FOR MORE OPEN SPACE IN KANE COUNTY
If you happen to live in Kane County, home to our farm, we urge you to vote YES on the referendum to increase the levy for acquisition of new land. The Forest Preserve District of Kane County has been a very supportive partner to our farm and we look forward to working with them for many years to come. With more funds to protect land from suburban sprawl, there could be more regenerative farms in the area operating on public land. To learn more about his important referendum, please visit the referendum page.
FARM STORE UPDATE
As the growing season in the upper midwest winds down, we still have a great selection of organic Michigan apples and apple products in the store, including unpasteurized organic apple cider. Other local and organic produce includes carrots, celery, potatoes, onions, fresh ginger, shallots, garlic, pomegranates, red pears, beets, and fresh mushrooms.
We also had more of our whole chickens cut into parts this week, so now is a good time to stock up on the airline breasts, leg quarters, thighs, and even boneless/skinless breasts as well as the legs, wings, and feet.
Checking the weather, it looks like a great fall day tomorrow for a farm tour…sunny with a high near 60 degrees. Only four more farm tours left for the season and the weather will likely not be as nice. Purchase your farm tour tickets online or in the farm store.
Graze on…
Cliff, Anna, and the Farm Team
